General Information on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) on Chrono24

Act sustainably – sell in compliance with the law: Extended producer responsibility (EPR) obliges producers and retailers to take responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products – from environmentally friendly design to use and disposal. Find out which legal obligations apply to you and how you can sell on Chrono24 in a legally compliant, sustainable, and responsible manner.
New: Manage EPR Obligations Easily in the Compliance Hub
According to EU regulations on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), a dealer is considered a producer in an EU country as soon as they place certain products or packaging for end consumers on this market for the first time – including in the context of distance selling and regardless of where the dealer is based.
As a Chrono24 partner selling new and pre-owned watches, you may be subject to EPR obligations with regard to packaging (PACK), electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), or batteries (BATT), depending on the products sold and the destination country.
Our new Compliance Hub provides you with step-by-step guidance and a central dashboard where you can review your EPR obligations, submit required data, and track their status at any time.
Once you have submitted the required data, the status will change to “Submitted” and the obligation in question will be considered fulfilled – unless we contact you for further verification.
Important note: This information does not constitute legal advice. It provides a general overview of extended producer responsibility (EPR) and the associated obligations on Chrono24. For individual legal questions, please contact a qualified legal advisor. Chrono24 can only provide information about its own monitoring obligations under the EPR legislation. Chrono24 is entitled to request proof of compliance with your EPR obligations at any time. As a dealer, you must ensure that you have all the necessary registrations and proofs so that your listings remain active.
What is extended producer responsibility (EPR)?
Extended producer responsibility (EPR) obliges producers and retailers to ensure that their products are designed, used, and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner throughout their entire life cycle. A producer within the meaning of EPR legislation is not only the body who actually produces the product, but also the party that offers it commercially or places it on the market for the first time in an EU country – i.e., dealers who sell items to customers in EU countries via Chrono24. The producer obligations take effect as soon as the products are offered for sale for the first time in the respective EU target country. EPR obligations apply in all EU countries, but may differ from country to country.
What are the obligations for dealers on Chrono24?
As an online marketplace, Chrono24 is legally obliged in EU countries to obtain information and evidence from dealers for certain product categories. In addition to the obligations to provide evidence to Chrono24, there may be other legal obligations that you must fulfill on your own – even if we do not specifically request or check them.
Relevant categories
- Packaging (PACK) – e.g., shipping and product packaging
- Batteries (BATT) – including built-in batteries in watches or accessories
- Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) – e.g., quartz watches, smartwatches, or watch winders
Since packaging is always used when shipping goods, the regulations on extended producer responsibility for packaging affect all dealers on Chrono24 who offer their products in EU countries. Additional requirements apply if your products contain batteries or electronic components. For each of these categories (PACK, BATT, EEE), you must register separately in the respective country, participate in an approved recycling system, and submit the corresponding registration numbers (EPR numbers) and, if necessary, additional evidence to Chrono24. Retailers without a registered office in the respective EU country must generally appoint an authorized representative based there to fulfil their EPR obligations. An authorized representative can be a natural or legal person (e.g., via a paid service such as Interzero, Pronexa, take-e-way) who acts on your behalf and performs tasks such as registration, reporting, and communication with authorities for one or more EPR categories or EU destination countries.
What happens in the event of non-compliance?
As a dealer on Chrono24, you must ensure that you fulfill all legal obligations regarding extended producer responsibility (EPR). If you do not comply with these requirements, your listings will be considered non-compliant. In this case, Chrono24 may have to block or remove your listings for the target markets in which you do not meet the requirements in order to comply with the law. Depending on the country, fines or sales bans may also be imposed.
The Compliance Hub
The Compliance Hub is designed to help you understand your EPR obligations and submit the required information when listing products or placing packaging in an EU country – in your case, new and pre-owned watches.
How the Compliance Hub Works
Extended producer responsibility (EPR) establishes certain obligations for partners who are active on Chrono24. The Compliance Hub explains:
- What EPR is and why you are considered a “producer”
- Which EPR categories may be relevant for you (PACK, EEE, BATT)
- The specific obligations arising from this depend on which products you offer to end consumers in EU countries – in your case, new and pre-owned watches
Within the Compliance Hub you can:
- View identified EPR obligations by destination country and EPR category
- View the status of individual EPR obligations, i.e., missing, submitted, rejected, or expired
- Filter EPR obligations by status, destination country, or EPR category
- See what is outstanding in each area
Each obligation contains step-by-step forms to:
- Enter EPR numbers
- Upload required evidence
- Review and edit transmitted data at any time
As soon as the data for an obligation has been submitted, its status changes to “submitted.”
After submission, the respective obligation is deemed to have been fulfilled unless further examination leads to a differing result.
What the Compliance Hub does not do:
- It does not register you with national authorities or producer responsibility organizations
- It does not constitute legal or regulatory advice
- It does not replace your obligation to ensure correct and complete registration
The responsibility for proper registration and notification remains with you.
Why is this important?
EU authorities require marketplaces such as Chrono24 to prove that retailers who place products or packaging – in this case, new and pre-owned watches – on the market for end consumers in EU countries comply with applicable EPR obligations.
The Compliance Hub helps you:
- Manage your EPR obligations in one central location and submit data
- Comply with your EPR obligations so that you can continue to sell to the relevant target countries

Important note: EPR obligations apply throughout the EU. The requirements described here relate exclusively to the evidence that Chrono24 must obtain by law as a marketplace. Your individual legal obligations may extend beyond this.
